Mercer Island Real Estate
Mercer Island is located in the middle of Lake Washington between Seattle and Bellevue. Home to over 23,000 people, Mercer Island is a luxury island in the midst of the Seattle metropolis.
Just over five miles long and two miles wide, Mercer Island lies in the middle of Lake Washington, east of Seattle and west of Bellevue. About 22,000 people currently have their home on the island.
Because of its island character, Mercer Island has a strong sense of community. Residents refer to themselves as Islanders and take pride in the Island’s friendly, small-town atmosphere.
While most residents work in Seattle or Eastside cities, there is also a growing number of residents who telecommute or operate home businesses. The proximity to Seattle, the low crime rate, the tranquil and woodsy ambiance, and the excellent schools have made Mercer Island one of the most desirable places to live in the region, and it has one of the wealthiest zip codes in the state - 98040.
The last year has brought the most sweeping changes to downtown Mercer Island since the ’60s and ’70s. Revitalization efforts initiated in 1993 to create a desirable and accessible downtown for Mercer Island residents are now bearing fruit. Six redevelopment projects are creating new retail and office spaces with the addition of about 800 apartments, condominiums and senior living units to the Town Center.
While most of the business activity on the Island is in the Town Center, there is also a newly redeveloped shopping center serving the south end of the Island. In April 2006, construction began on an expanded park-and-ride facility just north of I-90, which will double the number of parking spaces available and make public transportation to Bellevue and Seattle even easier.
Right in the heart of it all lies Mercer Island. Originally named for the Mercer Family in 1870, was known for it's lush berries and great fishing areas. The family members would row back and forth from Seattle to the island and sell their wares in town. Over the course of the next 40 years, large resorts were built and hotels would accommodate guests and visitors from Seattle for a weekend away on the island. The City of Mercer was incorporated from Seattle in 1960 and continues to be a home away from home for many working and commuting to Seattle.
Mercer Island has a wonderful waterfront all along it's shores with lake front homes and views. There are several parks around the island including Luther Burbank Park which is over 77 acres and includes boating access, fishing piers, swimming, amphitheater, tennis courts, picnic areas, and a dog park.
There is also the Park on the Lid atop the I-90 tunnel entrances. This park has softball fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic shelters, and the Freeway Sculpture Park. Pioneer Park covers 113 acres and has equestrian, bicycle, and hiking trails. Deane's Children Park, also known as "Dragon Park", is a small park with playground equipment and picnic areas.
